The idea of a pediatric association in
Surat was started by a group of practicing pediatricians who used to
meet in Mahavir General Hospital to discuss unusual and interesting
cases. The Surat Pediatric Association was launched in 1985-86 with
a one day CME held in Mahavir general Hospital. This inaugural CME
was addressed by Drs YK Amdekar, PG Samdani, Kirtane and Swati Bhave.
The first president of the association was Dr RP Shah, and Dr NG
Choraria the first secretary. In 1988-89, the association applied
for affiliation to the IAP headquarters, and since then has been
known as the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Surat Branch.
Fortunately IAP surat has found enthusiastic presidents and office
bearers who have done a lot to upgrade the association. Four of
them have also been presidents of Gujarat state branch of IAP.
Today, the association serves the CME needs of its members in
addition to providing expertise and faculty in pediatrics to other
associations and bodies from time to time. Improvement of child
healthcare and wellbeing is one of its primary objectives. Advocacy
for children and public health education to further the health and
well being of children are its other priorities. The Academy also
joins hands with like-minded associations of medical professionals
of other specialties for the achievement of its aims. |
